O AFS foi fundado em 1914, logo após o início da Primeira Guerra Mundial, quando jovens estadunidenses que viviam em Paris se voluntariaram para dirigir ambulâncias para um hospital da capital francesa. O grupo, que recebeu o nome de American Field Service (Serviço Americano de Campo), participou de todas as grandes batalhas francesas e transportou mais de 500 mil feridos durante a Primeira Guerra Mundial. Após a Guerra, veteranos do grupo pensaram em como poderiam fortalecer a amizade estabelecida com a França e decidiram criar um programa de bolsas para intercâmbio de universidades entre os Estados Unidos e a França.

 

Com a eclosão da Segunda Guerra Mundial, em 1939, o grupo voltou a prestar serviço voluntário de ambulâncias e transportou feridos na França, norte da África e Oriente Médio. A partir de 1943 motoristas do AFS passaram a servir também na Itália, Alemanha e Índia e transportaram mais de 700 mil homens. Os membros do grupo que serviram nas duas guerras  criaram laços com pessoas de diferentes nações, dessa forma estabelecendo os princípios que determinaram as atividades do AFS desde então.

 

Em 1946, o diretor geral da organização, Stephen Galatti, reuniu os motoristas das ambulâncias em Nova York para decidir o futuro do grupo. Galatti imaginou que a tradição de voluntariado e busca pela paz do AFS podia continuar através de intercâmbios educacionais entre diferentes culturas. Dessa forma, o AFS Intercultural Programs foi criado e se tornou uma organização internacional com o objetivo de proporcionar experiência intercultural entre estudantes de várias nações.

 

Hoje o AFS é uma das maiores organizações de base voluntária do mundo e está presente em mais de 50 países. Os programas de intercâmbio chegam a beneficiar mais de dez mil participantes por ano. O trabalho voluntário é a chave de toda a organização; famílias voluntárias hospedam estudantes estrangeiros, escolas voluntárias oferecem bolsas aos intercambistas e os comitês locais, formados por voluntários, se organizam para que toda a estrutura funcione.

 

O primeiro grupo de voluntários do AFS no Brasil foi organizado em 1956, criado pelos quarto intercambistas que viajaram para os Estados Unidos na primeira turma de intercambistas brasileiros. Atualmente são mais de 100 comitês espalhados por todo o Brasil e cerca de 900 voluntários ativos. Todo ano são enviados cerca de 400 estudantes para diversos países parceiros e mais de 300 intercambistas são recebidos no país.

 

AFS was founded in 1914, shortly after the outbreak of World War I, when young Americans living in Paris volunteered as ambulance drivers at a hospital in the French capital. The group, which received the name American Field Service, participated in all the great French battles and carried more than 500.000 wounded during World War I. After the war, veterans of he group considered how they could perpetuate the bond of friendship begun with France and decided to create a scholarship program on the graduate level between the United States and France.

 

With the beginning of the World War II, in 1939, the group volunteers started driving ambulances again to carry the wounded in France, North Africa and Middle East. From 1943 to 1945, AFS ambulance drivers also served in Italy, Germain and India and carried more than 700.000 men. Members from the group that served in the wars created bonds with people from different nations and established the principles that determined AFS activities since then.

 

In 1946, the Director General of the organization, Stephen Galatti, reunited the ambulance drivers in New York to decide the group’s future. Galatti thought that AFS tradition volunteering and world understanding could continue through cross-cultural educational exchanges. The AFS Intercultural Programs was created and it became an international organization with the mission of providing an intercultural experince between students from different nations.

 

Today AFS is one of the greatest volunteer-based organizations and it exists in more than 50 countries. The exchange programs benefits more than ten thousand participants each year. Voluntary work is the key of all the organization; voluntary families host foreign students, voluntary schools offer scholarships to the exchange students and the local committees, formed by volunteers, organize all the AFS structure.

 

The first AFS voluntary group in Brazil was formed in 1956, created by the four exchange students that traveled to the United States in the first Brazilian exchange group. Today there are more than 100 committees in Brazil and about 900 active volunteers. Every year 400 Brazilian students are sent to different countries and more than 300 exchange students from all around the world are received in our country.
