How do you know what a dream is, if you've never accomplished one.
How do you know what an adventure is, if you never took part in one.
How do you know what anguish is, if you never said goodbye to your family and friends with your eyes full of tears.
How do you know what being desperate is, if you've never arrived in a place alone and could not understand a word of what everyone else was saying. How do you know what diversity is, if you never lived under the same roof with people from all over the world?
How do you know what tolerance is, if you never had to get used to something different even if you didn't like it.
How do you know what autonomy is, if you never had the chance to decide something by yourself?
How do you know what it means to grow up, if you never stopped being a child to start a new course?
How do you know what it is to be helpless, if you never wanted to hug someone and had a computer screen to prevent you from doing it.
How do you know what distance is, if you've never looked at a map and said “I am so far away”.
How do you know what is the true reality, if you never had the chance to see a lot of them to make one.
How do you know what an opportunity is, if you've never caught one.
How do you know what pride is, if you've never experienced it for yourself at realizing how much you have accomplished.
How do you know what a friend is, if the circumstances never showed you the true ones.
How do know what family is, if you never had one that supported you unconditionally.
How do you know what borders are, if you never crossed yours to see what there was one the other side.
How do you know what imagination is, if you never thought about the moment when you would go back home.

An interview with a future exchange student

In the middle of 2012 a new group of Brazilian students will leave to, maybe, one of the best years in their lives, or at least a year full of changes and discoveries. Among these future exchange students is Pedro Müller Metsavaht Salomão, a 16 year old from Goiânia, who will live in Germany for a semester. Pedro, who hosts the Turkish Pamir üsküdarli since August, has known AFS Intercultural Programs through a friend that hosted an exchange student from Germany. The AFS Goiânia Committee Blog talked to Pedro about his expectations for his exchange experience.

AFS Goiânia Committee Blog: Why do you want to participate in an exchange program?

Pedro: I understood how the exchange experience is by hosting an exchange student and then I realized that it’s something I always wanted. I want to create a parallel life in another country, in a culture and way of living totally different from mines, make new friends and learn a new language.

AFS Goiânia Committee Blog: Why did you choose Germany?

Pedro: Germany is a country that has always interested me, in first place because I am a descendent of Germans, in second place because German is a language that can help me a lot in the future, and, finally, because I want to experience the cultural schock, which I think will be big and also something positive for my growth.

AFS Goiânia Committee Blog: Do you already know how to speak German?

Pedro: Not yet, but I’m studying to learn the basics and improve there.

AFS Goiânia Committee Blog: What are your expectations?

Pedro: I’m very anxious and a little bit afraid of it. I don’t know where I’m going to live or with who I’m going to live, but I hope it will be a good experience.

 AFS Goiânia Committee Blog: How do you intend to deal with the cultural differences during your exchange experience?

Pedro: I will always ask my host family and my adviser how I have to act, what I should or shouldn’t do, because I imagine that there are huge differences between the Brazilian and the German way.

AFS Goiânia Committee Blog:: Do you think these differences could make your exchange experience difficult?

Pedro: Maybe at the beginning, but I think this is one of the stages every exchange student has to go through during the program, the cultural shock. That’s one of the reasons for my decision, but I’m still a little afraid of it.

AFS Goiânia Committee Blog: Do you think that the exchange experience and knowing people from other countries could help building a better world?

Pedro: Yes, it’s one more step to understand other cultures and to end prejudice.

AFS Goiânia Committee Blog: Do you wish to become an AFS volunteer when you come back to Brazil?

Pedro: Sure, since I’ve known AFS I’ve became friends with a lot of exchange students that have come to Brazil and I like to meet foreigners and also the voluntary work. I aspire to become a volunteer when I come back.

No segundo semestre de 2012, uma nova leva de estudantes brasileiros irá partir para, talvez, um dos melhores anos da vida deles, ou pelo menos um ano de muitas mudanças e descobertas. Entre esses girinos, ou futuros intercambistas, está o goianiense Pedro Müller Metsavaht Salomão, de 16 anos, que irá morar por um semestre na Alemanha. Pedro, que desde agosto hospeda o turco Pamir üsküdarli, conheceu o AFS Intercultural Programs através de um amigo que hospedou uma intercambista alemã. O Blog AFS Comitê Goiânia conversou com o Pedro sobre suas expectativas para o intercâmbio.

Blog AFS Comitê Goiânia: Por que você quer fazer intercâmbio?

Pedro: Eu entendi como é o intercâmbio hospedando um intercâmbista na minha casa, e, pelo que eu vi, é algo que eu sempre quis. Eu quero criar uma vida paralela à minha em outro país, em uma cultura e forma de viver totalmente diferentes da minha, fazer amizades, além de aprender outro idioma.

Pedro: A Alemanha é um país que sempre me interessou muito, primeiro pelo fato de que tenho descendência, segundo porque o alemão é uma língua que pode me ajudar muito futuramente e, finalmente, o choque cultural, que vai ser muito grande e será algo positivo pro meu crescimento.

Blog AFS Comitê Goiânia: Você já sabe falar alemão?

Pedro: Ainda não, mas estou fazendo aulas pra aprender o básico e aperfeiçoar lá.

Blog AFS Comitê Goiânia: Quais são as suas expectativas?

Pedro: Estou muito ansioso e com um pouco de receio. Não sei onde vou morar e nem com quem eu vou morar, mas eu espero que seja uma experiência boa.

 Blog AFS Comitê Goiânia: Como você pretende lidar com as diferenças culturais quando você estiver no intercâmbio? 

Pedro: Eu vou sempre perguntar para a minha família hospedeira e ao meu conselheiro como devo agir, o que eu devo ou não fazer, porque eu imagino que existam diferenças imensas entre o estilo brasileiro e o alemão.

Blog AFS Comitê Goiânia: Você acha que essas diferenças podem dificultar a sua experiência de intercâmbio?

Pedro: Talvez no início, mas acho que essa é uma das etapas que todo intercâmbista deve passar durante o programa, o choque cultural. Esse é um dos motivos da minha decisão, mas tenho certo receio disso sim.

Blog AFS Comitê Goiânia: Você acredita que o intercâmbio e conhecer pessoas de países diferentes pode ajudar na construção de um mundo melhor?

Pedro: Sim, é mais um passo para compreender as outras culturas e de acabar com os preconceitos que, querendo ou não, existem.

Blog AFS Comitê Goiânia: Você tem vontade de se tornar um voluntário do AFS quando voltar para o Brasil?

Pedro: Claro, desde que conheci o AFS fiz muitas amizades com intercâmbistas que vieram ao Brasil e gostei muito de ter contato com os estrangeiros e também do trabalho voluntário. Pretendo sim, quando voltar do meu intercâmbio, me tornar um voluntário.

Festa Beneficente

Nossos girinos (estudantes que ainda vão fazer intercâmbio) organizaram e realizaram no último sábado, dia 14 de abril, uma festa de caráter beneficente com o objetivo de arrecadar dinheiro para ajudar a Carol, a intercambista bolsista de Goiás que, desde o começo do ano, reside na Argentina. O evento também contou com o apoio de alguns intercambistas que vivem em Goiânia. Graças ao esforço dos meninos, a festa foi um sucesso. Agradecemos a todos que participaram e contribuiram.

Festa Alemã

O AFS Comitê Goiânia convida a todos para a Festa Alemã organizada por nossos girinos (estudantes que ainda vão fazer o intercâmbio). O evento será realizado no próximo sábado, dia 14 de abril, às 20h no Setor Jaó.  O endereço é: Avenida De Lourdes, Quadra 142, Lote 10/11. A entrada antecipada custa R$15,00 e na hora R$20,00. Quem for à festa poderá se deliciar com comidas típicas alemãs, como currywurst e hot dog alemão.

A Festa Alemã tem caráter beneficente e tem como objetivo arrecadar fundos para ajudar nossos intercambistas bolsistas. Neste ano alguns estudantes brasileiros da rede pública, que não teriam condições de arcar com os custos de um programa de intercâmbio, foram contemplados com bolsas integrais de estudo oferecidos pelo AFS Intercultura Brasil. Uma das bolsas foi para uma goiana que, desde o começo do ano, está vivenciando uma experiência intercultural na Argentina. Mesmo com o auxílio da bola, nós voluntários queremos ajudá-la a se manter tranquilamente por lá, sem se preocupar com dinheiro e se concentrando em seus estudos. Para isso contamos com a colaboração de vocês!

The AFS returnee Guilherme talks about his year in Denmark

In August 2007, Guilherme Pereira Gabler, from Goiânia, traveled to Denmark for an cultural exchange program. During one year he lived with a Danish family, studied at a Danish school and made friends with people from all around the world. But before he became an exchange student, he and his family hosted a student from New Zealand for four months. It was knowing this girl from another country (and also knowing other exchange students that studied at his school) that made Guilherme interested in becoming an exchange student. He talked to the AFS Goiânia Committee Blog about his experience in Denmark.

AFS Goiânia Committee Blog: How did you know AFS Intercultural Programs?

Guilherme: The school were I studied (Integrado Jaó) received exchange students. 

AFS Goiânia Committee Blog: Why did you choose Denmark as your exchange country?

Guilherme: I choose Denmark because it’s an “unusual” and  unknown place. As an exchange experience, I wanted to see and live something new, learn a new and unknown language and live a cultura that is really different from the one I was used to. I think I couldn’t have chosen better, because the Danish language and culture fascinate me till today.

AFS Goiânia Committee Blog: How was your exchange experience?

Guilherme: I wanted to say “great” and nothing more. But it was a year full of emotions and experiences of all kinds that made me grow as a person. For some moments it was, without a doubt, very hard, and why not say “bad”? But it surely was the best experience I could’ve had.

AFS Goiânia Committee Blog: What was the greatest difficulty you had to go through during your exchange year?

Guilherme: Without a doubt it was the beginning of my exchange year, learning the language and the initial contact with people, mainly because there was no “way of communication”. But with time everything worked out and I discovered that the famous “coldness” of Danish people (or Europeans in general) was nothing more that a bad impression caused by tourists that didn’t know what they were talking about.

AFS Goiânia Committee Blog: What do you think is the greatest difference between Brazil and Denmark?

Guilherme: Good manners!  Caring about people, being kind, knowing your community, and these kinds of things. Unfortunately that was the biggest difference, because I don’t see the Brazilian people being very gentle. At least not like the Danish.

AFS Goiânia Committee Blog: Did you change during your exchange experience?

Guilherme: A lot. When I remember the boy that left Goiânia to go to the unknown and cold Denmark, and then I look at me today, I feel as if they were two different people. The exchange experience made me change the way I interact and, especially, understand people and their differences. And of course, I’ve learnt to know me better and know my own culture better, mainly because I took up the role as a “foreigner”.

AFS Goiânia Committee Blog: Do you think that living abroad influenced your personal and professional choices?

Guilherme: I think so. The exchange experience made me understand a lot about the world around me a about myself. This self-knowledge surely helped me a lot in my choices.

  

AFS Goiânia Committee Blog: How was coming back to Brazil and the readaptation?

Guilherme: It was a shock. I was happy to see my friends and family again, but I really missed my “second family” and every thing I lived in Denmark. For a while I didn’t accept the fact that I was back very well and I had a feeling I didn’t belong here. But today I understand that this is the proof that I took part in a “cultural exchange experience”. I lived so intensely with the Danish culture and people, that sometimes, even without noticing, I felt part of them. But today I understand that all these “shocks” I went through were enriching.

AFS Goiânia Committee Blog: Do you miss Denmark? Do you keep n touch with your host family and friends? Do you think of going back?

Guilherme: Even today, a part of me is, without a doubt, still in Denmark, and always will be. I still keep in touch with some friends I met there, the Danish and other exchange students. I also maintain contact with my host family, which I truly think of as a second family to me. Some of my friends already visited me here in Brazil, including my host sister, and last year I had the opportunity to go back to Denmark and see my host family and some of my friends I studied with. And the best thing is that, even though I went back three years later, I felt at home, like I had never left.

O returnee Guilherme fala de seu intercâmbio na Dinamarca

Em agosto de 2007, o goianiense Guilherme Pereira Gaebler, agora com 21 anos, viajou para a Dinamarca para realizar um intercâmbio cultural. Durante um ano ele viveu com uma família dinamarquesa, estudou em uma escola dinamarquesa e fez amigos de todo o mundo. Mas antes de se tornar um intercambista ele e sua família hospedaram uma estudante da Nova Zelândia  por quatro meses e foi graças a esse convivio e (também com os outros intercambistas que frequentaram o colégio dele) que Guilherme se interessou pelo intercâmbio. Ele conversou com o Blog AFS Comitê Goiânia sobre sua experiência na DInamarca.

Blog AFS Comitê Goiânia: Como conheceu o AFS?

Blog AFS Comitê Goiânia: Por que escolheu a Dinamarca como país de intercâmbio?

Guilherme: Escolhi a Dinamarca por ser um lugar bem "incomum" e desconhecido. Como uma experiência de intercâmbio, esperava justamente ver e viver algo novo, aprender uma língua nova e desconhecida e vivenciar uma cultura que fosse bem diferente da qual eu estava habituado. Acho que a escolha não poderia ter sido melhor, afinal, tanto a língua quanto a cultura dinamarquesa me fascinam e me surpreendem até hoje.

Blog AFS Comitê Goiânia: Como foi a sua experiência?

Guilherme: A vontade é de dizer "ótima" e nada mais. Mas de fato foi um ano de emoções e experiências de todos os tipos que acima de qualquer coisa, me fez crescer pessoalmente. Em alguns momentos, sem dúvida, muito difícil e por que não dizer "ruim"? Mas com certeza foi a melhor experiência que eu poderia ter tido.

Blog AFS Comitê Goiânia: Qual foi a maior dificuldade que você viveu no seu intercâmbio?

Guilherme: Sem dúvida alguma foi o início do intercâmbio, o aprendizado da língua (dinamarquês) e o contato inicial com as pessoas, justamente pela falta de um "meio de comunicação". Mas com o tempo tudo isso se resolveu e eu descobri o quanto a tão famosa "frieza" do povo dinamarquês (ou europeu em geral) não passava de uma impressão rasa de turistas desavisados.

Blog AFS Comitê Goiânia: O que você achou de mais diferente entre o Brasil e a Dinamarca?

Guilherme: Educação! A educação de se preocupar com o próximo, ser gentil, ter a consciência de "coletivo" e comunidade, e por aí vai. Infelizmente, essa foi a maior diferença, pois não vejo o povo brasileiro sendo muito educado. Pelo menos não como os dinamarqueses.

Blog AFS Comitê Goiânia: Você mudou durante o intercâmbio?

Guilherme: Bastante. Quando me lembro do garoto que saiu de Goiânia rumo à desconhecida e gelada Dinamarca, e me vejo hoje, sinto como se essas fossem duas pessoas diferentes. A experiência do intercâmbio como um todo me fez mudar muito a forma de interagir e, principalmente, entender as pessoas e suas diferenças. Além de, é claro, ter me conhecido melhor e até mesmo conhecido melhor a minha própria cultura, justamente por assumir o papel do "estrangeiro".

Blog AFS Comitê Goiânia: Você acha que ter feito intercâmbio influenciou em suas escolhas pessoais e profissionais?

Guilherme: Acho que sim. A experiência do intercâmbio me fez entender muito sobre o mundo à minha volta e principalmente sobre mim mesmo. Esse autoconhecimento com certeza me ajudou muito nas minhas escolhas.

  

Blog AFS Comitê Goiânia: Como foi o retorno ao Brasil e a readaptação?

Guilherme: Um baque, dos grandes. Fiquei alegre de rever amigos e familiares, mas a saudade da minha "segunda família" e tudo o que vivi lá era muito grande. Por um bom tempo, fiquei quase que inconformado e com o sentimento de que aqui não era o meu lugar. Mas hoje vejo que isso é a mais pura prova de que de fato eu participei de um "intercâmbio cultural". Convivi tão intensamente com a cultura e o povo dinamarquês, muitas vezes mesmo sem perceber, que eu já me sentia parte daquele meio. Mas hoje vejo que todos esses "choques" que vivi foram muito enriquecedores.

Blog AFS Comitê Goiânia: Você sente falta da Dinamarca? Você tem contato com sua família hospedeiros e amigos? Pensa em voltar (ou já voltou)?

Guilherme: Até hoje, um pedaço de mim está na Dinamarca, sem dúvida alguma, e sempre estará. Ainda tenho contato com alguns amigos, tanto dinamarqueses quanto outros intercambistas que conheci lá, além da minha família hospedeira, que considero realmente como uma segunda família. Alguns amigos já me visitaram aqui no Brasil, inclusive a minha irmã hospedeira, e no ano passado tive a oportunidade de voltar à Dinamarca e rever a minha família hospedeira e muitos dos meus amigos com quem estudei. E o melhor é que mesmo voltando lá três anos depois, eu me senti completamente em casa, como se eu nunca tivesse saído de lá.

Interview with a Brazilian exchange student in France

Gustavo Baptista Siqueira, 17 years old, is from Goiânia and last year he decided that he wanted to be an exchange student and participate in the intercultural experience offered by AFS Intercultural Programs. Since the second semester of 2011 he lives in Chauny, France, and, even though there were some difficulties in the beginning, he is happy. The AFS Goiânia Committee Blog talked to Gustavo about his experience of being an exchange student in France.

AFS Goiânia Committee Blog: Why did you decide to participare in an exchange program?

Gustavo: I’m young, I’m still in high school, so I took the chance to do an exchange program while I’m still young, because I don’t know if I’ll have other opportunity. And I also wanted to grow and change my life a little bit.

AFS Goiânia Committee Blog: Why did you choose France?

Gustavo: I chose France because is has such an attractive culture and I also wanted to learn French.

AFS Goiânia Committee Blog: How’s the experience so far?

Gustavo: The experience now is great. There were some unpleasant moments, but it’s always like that in the beginning.

AFS Goiânia Committee Blog: What was the greatest difficulty you had to go through?

Gustavo: The greatest difficulty was changing my routine, families… It’s strange to think that now your host family is going to be your family for an year. And it’s always difficult to adapt to some rules.

AFS Goiânia Committee Blog: What do you think is the most different thing in France compared to Brazil?

Gustavo: Here in France people are really cool, but it’s not the same when compared to Brazilians. 

AFS Goiânia Committee Blog: Did you change during your exchange year?

Gustaavo: I changed a lot! We change a lot during the experience, the way of treating people and the way of thinking too.

AFS Goiânia Committee Blog: Do you think doing an exchange program will be good for your future?

Gustavo: It’s always good to learn new things, every knowledge is useful. Learning a new language is something we’ll keep for the rest of our lives and it allows us to communicate with more people.
